Some of the most urgent notarizations happen in places the signer can't leave, like a hospital bed, a rehab center, a nursing home, or a jail. Notary Java travels to these facilities across Southern Maine. A little planning makes each visit smoother.
Before We Arrive
1. Confirm the Signer's ID
This is the biggest hurdle. In hospitals and jails, IDs are often held by family or in the facility's property room. Please:
- Locate the signer's current government photo ID
- Ask the facility how it can be brought to the signing
- If there's no ID, ask us about the credible witness option under Maine law
2. Check Facility Rules
- Hospitals and nursing homes may have visiting hours, check-in procedures, or infection-control rules.
- Jails and correctional facilities set their own procedures for professional visits, and there may be scheduling or approval steps. Contact the facility first and share what it tells you.
3. Arrange Witnesses if Needed
Some documents, like a Maine health care power of attorney, require two witnesses. Facility staff often can't serve, so bring family or friends if your form calls for witnesses.
4. Have the Document Ready
Send us the document through our Upload Document Now button and we'll print it, or have the finished document on hand.
At the Signing
- We confirm identity and speak briefly with the signer.
- The signer must be aware and acting willingly. If a signer seems confused, sedated, or pressured, we may need to decline or come back another time. This protects the signer and the family.
- We complete the notarial certificate and give the document back to you.
Common Documents
- Financial powers of attorney
- Health care directives, when notarization is wanted
- Affidavits and sworn statements
- Real estate and vehicle documents
- Consent letters for a child's travel

Frequently Asked Questions
Can you notarize for someone in the hospital?
Yes, as long as the signer has acceptable ID or a credible witness, and is aware and acting willingly.
Can you notarize at a jail?
Often, yes, but the facility controls access. Contact them about professional visit procedures first.
What if my relative has no ID?
Ask about a credible witness. Maine law allows identification by a qualifying credible witness under oath or affirmation.
Can hospital staff be witnesses?
Some facilities don't allow it. Check with the facility and bring your own witnesses if possible.
