Child Passport When One Parent Is Away or Overseas

Blog /

Life doesn't always put both parents in the same zip code. One parent may be deployed, working on a job site out of state, or living overseas. The U.S. Department of State still requires both parents' consent for a child under 16, so when one parent can't be at the passport appointment, the worry is whether their consent will be done correctly and accepted.

Notary Java takes care of that. We notarize the absent parent's DS-3053 the right way, at home, at work, or at a hotel, often with evening appointments, so your child's application keeps moving.

The Absent Parent Signs a DS-3053

The parent who can't appear completes Form DS-3053, *Statement of Consent*, and signs it in front of a notary. The applying parent then brings it to the passport acceptance facility with:

  • The child's DS-11 application
  • Proof of the child's U.S. citizenship and parental relationship
  • A photocopy of the front and back of the ID the absent parent showed the notary

The Department of State's instructions say the DS-3053 should be notarized the same day it is signed and submitted within 90 days of notarization.
